Keyboard Merits
As teachers, we are already preparing for the end of the teaching year recitals, festivals, and exams. For those getting ready for Keyboard Merits, I would like to draw your attention to the following items:

1. Registration is March 1-31. Auditions will be April 1-May 31.
2. Fees are $18 for 15 minute period and $36 for 30 minute period of judging. All teachers are to make sure each student receives their time period and judges are to make sure they do not extend any time periods.
3. Checks for enrollment (made out to Federated Music Teachers) are to be sent to the chair, Melissa Falkner, and not to the treasurer.
4. Ribbon and trophy orders will be sent by the teacher to Dean’s Trophy.
For those new to Keyboard Merit Auditions, it is a wonderful way of having an end of year music performance exam that is not competitive within your studio or with others. Auditions take place at the teacher’s studio (either virtually or live). This is a real plus for students, as they are in a familiar place, with a familiar instrument. You have the option of joining another teacher at their studio.
Each student plays repertoire and technique at a level that the teacher feels is appropriate. An adjudicator, other than his teacher, gives a rating on the student’s performance, along with comments and suggestions. Each year the student will receive a ribbon and critique, with a maximum of 6 points. These points accrue each year and trophies are given for each 10 point increment.
There are 14 levels, ranging from early elementary through advanced. Each level has the technique and repertoire outlined. There are also options to allow for flexibility in choosing repertoire to fit a student’s needs and preferences. These are all outlined in the Syllabus, which is attached below. If there are questions or concerns, please email me and I will help in any way I can.
